The Role
We are offering the opportunity for substantive Leading Firefighters to apply for promotion into the Sub Officer role.
This position is open to both internal and external applicants.To be eligible to apply for this role you must be a substantive Leading Firefighter serving as a whole time officer (with a whole time contract) in a UK local authority fire and rescue service who is competent in all elements of the role map including Unit 7 (WM7 – Lead and support people to resolve operational incidents).
Existing internal Sub Officers wishing to transfer to another station or alternative location should follow the transfer request process and not apply for this assessment process.
Part of the process will first incorporate a knowledge test and then a practical drill exercise (see attached documents) and candidates are advised to start preparing and practising for these elements now. There will be a number of workshops focusing on drills that external candidates will be invited to attend, if you are interested in attending these please email JOAT@london-fire.gov.uk to register your interest.
Please be advised that if you are unable to make the scheduled assessment dates, we may not be able to make alternative arrangements. Therefore please state in your application form all your unavailable dates within the next few months.
At the end of the process, successful applicants will be promoted to Sub Officer and there are available positions in all four Areas.
An individual who declines an offer of promotion will not receive a second offer and must wait until the next advert is published at which time they can carry their accumulated score forward. They therefore are not required to go through the whole process again.

Assessment Overview
Stage 1
Knowledge Test held at Hammersmith Assessment Centre - please see attached bibliography. You are advised to start preparing for your knowledge test straight away. External candidates who require access to the policy notes should email assessmentcentre@london-fire.gov.uk to request copies. Internal candidates can find all policies on Hotwire.
Please note: if you have passed the knowledge test within the last year you will not be required to repeat this element.
Stage 2 (One day assessment held in Area locations)
1 Combined ladder and hose drill (please see attached drill booklet). If you successfully pass this stage of the assessment, you will be invited to continue on the day with the elements below.
2 Operational Observation Exercise – This is an incident command–type virtual exercise assessing hazard observation and decision making at an incident
3 Presentation – Candidates that are successful at Stage 1 will receive a presentation topic in advance of the their assessment day. Candidates are to prepare a 10 minute Powerpoint presentation.
4 Interview – Areas covered will be based on the LFB’s values and will be a maximum of 40 minutes. Communication skills will be assessed throughout the interview.
Additional Information
In line with the Basic Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) employment checks will be completed by successful candidates, which will include a basic criminal records check. Successful candidate will be required to declare any convictions for offences which are not spent under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and any offer of employment is subject to the LFC receiving a criminal records disclosure which it considers satisfactory. Successful candidates should apply to the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) to get a copy of their criminal record and share the original disclosure certificate with the LFC. The check will only show convictions that are not ‘spent’. It will cost the successful candidates £23 (current charge) and usually takes up to 14 days.
