Applicants are also required to hold a full UK manual driving licence. External candidates will also need to be serving as a whole time officer in a local government brigade.

Assessment Overview

Please note that the assessment process is sequential – therefore each stage must be passed in order to progress.

Stage 1: A knowledge test, which will be based on the attached bibliography, is scheduled to be held in mid June 2019. You are advised to start preparing for your knowledge test straight away. External candidates who require access to the policy notes should email assessmentcentre@london-fire.gov.uk to request copies. Internal candidates can find all policies on Hotwire. Candidates who pass the knowledge test will then have their application shortlisted. If successful at shortlist, candidates will be invited to Stage 2 of the process.

Stage 2: Successful candidates from stage 1 will be invited to an assessment development centre consisting of a range of role related exercises; a structured interview, a role play exercise and written exercise, scheduled to be held in early July 2019.

Stage 3: An Incident Command Exercise, is scheduled to be held in August 2019 for those successful at Stage 2.

Stage 4: All appointable candidates after Stage 3 will be invited to express up to 2 preferences for vacant Station Manager posts, and will then be invited to informal interviews with the relevant Heads of Service. Informal interviews will be scored and will determine who is appointed to the vacant posts. Candidates not appointed to a vacant post in the Stage 4 process will form a panel for appointments to subsequent Station Manager vacancies. You will remain on the panel until you are promoted regardless of any future rounds.

Please be advised that if you are unable to make the scheduled assessment dates, we may not be able to make alternative arrangements. Please state all your unavailable dates in your application form and keep us informed throughout the assessment process of any further unavailability you may have.
