The Role

London Fire Brigade are currently recruiting to the rank of Station Commander.

Assessment Overview

To apply please complete the online application form by 23 July 2021 and upload all the documents you will need to submit with your application form: a CV, a covering letter and an expression of interest form.

Please make sure you give yourself plenty of time to complete and submit your application form prior to the closing date, as late applications will not be accepted. Internal applicants - you also need to factor in time for your line management chain to complete parts 2 & 3 of the expression of interest form.

Your application should include:

1. Your current CV;

2. A covering letter (no more than 1500 words) detailing how your skill set meet all those required as a station commander (covering three specific areas; Takes ownership and responsibility – Demonstrates personal accountability for something in the workplace. Teamwork – Works with others to achieve results. Professional – Demonstrates high standards and the skills and ability to deliver.) You can decide how you distribute the words allowed;

3. Your expression of interest form.

Please note that your CV and covering letter should be saved into a single Word or PDF document. You will need to upload your document in the CV section of the application form. Applicants will also need to upload their expression of interest forms (Internal applicants - parts 1, 2 & 3 completed and for external applicants - part 1 completed only) in the Other attachments section of the application form.

Assessment Process

Please note that the assessment process is sequential – you will need to be successful in each stage in order to progress to the next.

Stage 1: The evidence presented with your application will be assessed and you will be invited to an initial sift Interview, scheduled to be held in late July 2021.

Stage 2: Successful candidates from stage 1 will be invited to an Incident Command Exercise, scheduled to be held in August 2021. Successful candidates from stage 2 will be invited to the final stage.

Stage 3: All successful candidates will be required to participate in a final interview, a role play, a written exercise, and a presentation.

Please note that whilst the advert is live, we will be running several Q and A session both in Union Street and via Teams. The primary purpose of these sessions is to talk about the role in more depth and some of the benefits. The dates and timings are:

Additional Information

For external candidates, in line with the Basic Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) employment checks will be completed by successful candidates, which will include a basic criminal records check. Successful candidate will be required to declare any convictions for offences which are not spent under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and any offer of employment is subject to the LFC receiving a criminal records disclosure which it considers satisfactory. Successful candidates should apply to the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) to get a copy of their criminal record and share the original disclosure certificate with the LFC. The check will only show convictions that are not ‘spent’. It will cost the successful candidates £23 (current charge) and usually takes up to 14 days.
