National Fire Chiefs Council

About us

The National Fire Chiefs Council is a membership organisation and the professional voice of the fire and rescue service in the UK. We have ambitious strategic commitments and a substantial programme of work to deliver improvement that benefits all of our members.

Our Central Programme Office is responsible for managing our programmes in three key areas: community risk, people, and digital and data. In addition, we support the work of the Fire Standards Board.

We are looking for up to seven new project managers who are experienced in working as part of a team, have a flexible approach, bring lots of enthusiasm and a touch of humour too.

What you’ll be doing

You will be working in one of our three programme teams or in our team developing standards for the fire and rescue service. Our project managers work on a number of projects at any one time. You will be responsible for all aspects of project management and be expected to write funding submissions, build business cases and assemble procurement documentation in line with existing rules and frameworks. You will work alongside other project managers and form part of a strong team integral to the successful delivery of the programmes.

Who are we looking for?

You should be an experienced project manager who is driven to get the work done and have a thoughtful and collaborative approach. We are running change projects and programmes, so we need you to bring your experience of working in this way and understand what is required for successful transformation.

You will need to hold professional project management qualifications and ideally be a member of the Association for Project Management. We will support you with your further professional development. We run our projects based on Managing Successful Project methodology, so you will need to share your experience of using this in previous roles.

We need you to be a dab hand at using technology to run your projects; you will need to demonstrate that you are confident with a range of software to get the job done, picking up new skills along the way.

You need to know about the financial and procurement aspects of delivering successful projects along with an ability to bring people with you by articulating the case for change.

You should have developed excellent all-round communication skills and be comfortable working with senior stakeholders. You do not need to have any prior experience of the fire and rescue service, you will work alongside subject matter experts, many of whom are seconded to the CPO from fire and rescue services. You will work to more than one manager so you will need to be happy with matrix management.

What it’s like to work here

We are a friendly team based in London Fire Brigade’s headquarters in Southwark, south London. We are happy to support substantial home working but you should expect to be in London at least one day per week and be prepared to travel in line with the needs of your projects.

You can find out more about the work of the National Fire Chiefs Council at www.nationalfirechiefs.org.uk.
