London Fire Brigade is the capital's fire and rescue service – one of the largest firefighting and rescue organisations in the world. We are here to make London a safer city and our vision is to be a world class fire and rescue service for London, Londoners and visitors.

We employ over five and half thousand people in different roles, including operational staff, 999 call handlers and non-uniformed and non-operational staff who work to support our front-line services. But while everyone’s role is different, we all have one thing in common: the need to be involved, informed and inspired in our day-to-day work. Effective internal communications is essential in making sure that happens.

The Internal Communications Manager will take a leading role in the development and delivery of all internal communications. This is an exciting opportunity for an ambitious, confident and hard-working senior internal communications professional. Based in central London, the role reports to the Head of Internal Communications. The successful candidate will advise and represent the organisation on all internal communications and how best to engage staff, based on audience insight.

The successful candidate will be resilient and adept in working with senior stakeholders, colleagues across the Brigade and partner organisations. A great writer, the Internal Communications Manager will head up a small team to proactively plan, produce and manage staff communications using a range of content and channels.

You’ll have a degree or equivalent experience and have managed internal communications within a high profile, dynamic and diverse organisation. You’ll be politically aware and astute and able to operate and communicate information sensitively. You’ll also have managed projects or campaigns and be ready to create communications that really do make a difference for our workforce.

Assessment Overview

Please address the following criteria:

1.2 Experience of developing, writing and implementing successful internal communications strategies and plans using the full range of communications techniques.

1.4 Politically aware and astute and able to operate and communicate information in a politically sensitive way.

1.5 Practical experience of developing modern communication tools including effective face-to-face and digital communications /platforms for internal audiences.

3.1 A strong understanding of best practice and effective internal communications suitable for a large or complex organisation.

Additional Information

In line with the Basic Personnel Security Standard (BPSS), employment checks will be completed for the successful person, which will include a basic criminal records check. The successful person will be required to declare any convictions for offences which are not spent under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and a Disclosure Scotland Basic Disclosure will be undertaken before an appointment is confirmed.
