We are looking to recruit a person with a high level of expertise in and experience of governance matters, who has a proven track record of advising senior officers on governance matters at Board level, and who understands and works effectively within a political environment.

The key areas of the role are:

• Managing the Governance Team to support the Commissioner as fire and rescue authority for Greater London.
• Ensuring that the Brigade operates, and is managed, within a best practice, sound, accountable and transparent governance framework.
• Ensuring that governance processes work effectively meeting the requirements of political leaders, managers and operational services.
• Leading the continued development of the Department’s governance services to secure continuous improvement, value for money and operational excellence while maintaining best practice standards.
• Ensuring the provision of constructive and authoritative advice to the Commissioner, the Commissioner’s Board and the Brigade generally, ensuring compliance with legal obligations and reflecting best practice standards
• Identifying the governance issues facing individual services and providing best practice governance advice and support.
• Supporting the Monitoring Officer in the discharge of their statutory duties.

Working as a senior manager in the General Counsel Department at this very exciting time in the Brigade’s future, you will be responsible for ensuring that the governance framework is effective, efficient and advances and protects the interests of the Brigade and the London community that it serves. Working directly with senior officers within and outside the Brigade you will need to be confident and articulate, and able to grasp, analyse and act on information quickly and productively. You will be responsible for leading the Governance Team in the delivery of a high quality and effective service, and you will be a key member of the General Counsel Management Team, advancing the London Fire Commissioner's Transformation Delivery Plan and promoting and embedding the values of the Brigade across the department.
