The Role

London Fire Brigade are currently recruiting to the role of Group Manager.

Salary range for the Group Manager role £60,939.60 - £67,772.40

Eligibility

To be eligible to apply for this role you must be a competent Station Manager who has demonstrated competence against the requirements of the Station Manager role map in an operational post. Applicants are also required to hold a full UK manual driving licence. External candidates will also need to be serving as a whole time officer in a local government brigade.

Assessment Overview

To apply please complete the online application form by 29 January 2019 23:59 GMT and upload all the documents you will need to submit with your application form: a CV, a covering letter and an expression of interest form (please follow the application guidance in the attachments below). Please make sure you give yourself plenty of time to complete and submit your application form prior to the closing date, as late applications will not be accepted. You also need to factor in time for your line management chain to complete.

Your application should include:

1. Your up to date CV;
2. A covering letter (no more than 1500 words) detailing how your skill set meet that of those required as a Group Manager (covering three specific areas; Leadership, Leading Change and Resources and Performance);
3. Your completed expression of interest form (internal candidates only).

Please note that your CV and covering letter should be saved into a single Word or Pdf document. You will need to upload your document in the CV section of the application form.

Internal applicants will also need to upload their completed expression of interest forms in the Other attachments section of the application form.

Please note external candidates do not need to complete the expression of interest form but still need to complete all of the other elements in Stage 1.

Assessment Process
Please note that the assessment process is sequential – therefore each stage must be passed in order to progress.

Stage 1: The evidence presented with your application will be assessed and those candidates shortlisted will be invited to Stage 2.

A knowledge test (pass/fail) Based on questions from the bibliography attached. External candidates who require access to the policy notes should email recruitment (assessmentcentre@london-fire.gov.uk) and request copies. Internal candidates can find all policies on Hotwire.

Stage 2: Successful candidates from stage 1 will be invited to an assessment development centre consisting of a structured interview, a presentation and a written proposal due to take place late February/early March 2019.

Stage 3: An Incident Command Exercise, scheduled to be held in April 2019.

Stage 4: All appointable candidates after Stage 3 will be invited to express up to 2 preferences for vacant Group Manager posts, and will then be invited to interviews with the relevant Heads of Service. Interviews will be scored and will determine who is appointed to the vacant posts. Candidates not appointed to a vacant post in the Stage 4 process will form a panel for appointments to subsequent Group Manager vacancies.

Additional Information

For external candidates, in line with the Basic Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) pre-employment checks will be completed for the successful person, which will include a basic criminal records check. The successful person will be required to declare any convictions for offences which are not spent under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and a basic disclosure will be undertaken before an appointment is confirmed. .
