Competent Fire Investigation Officers that have relevant and valid Fire Investigation qualifications (to the sector minimum requirement, Level 5), with current and extensive experience of working as a Fire Investigator and relevant experience or qualification in relevant legal processes (e.g. expert witness or investigative practice), are invited to apply for the position as a FRSD Fire Investigation Officer.

The role of the Fire Investigation Officer is to investigate the fire scene in order to determine the origin, cause, progression of the fire and how people involved have behaved. Subsequently communicate the findings to various bodies in the form of written reports.

Please note:
• The position is that of a FRS D Fire Investigation Officer. This will be for a short fixed term contract until September 2021. The successful candidate will be expected to immediately commence the role of the Fire Investigation Officer.

• The successful candidate will immediately take up a position with the Fire Investigation Team, currently based at Dowgate Fire Station. There will be a period of probation of 2 months.

• Working patterns will predominately be on the four watch system. There may be a requirement to undertake a day duty system, if necessary.

• Applicants must have a relevant driving qualification in order to undertake the role immediately.

Eligibility

In order to be eligible for entry to this process, you must:

• A valid full driving license (car/light van).

• A relevant and valid Fire Investigation qualification to the sector minimum requirement (Level 5) and preferably experience or qualification in relevant legal processes (e.g. expert witness or investigative practice), or recognised equivalent qualifications and/ or experience.

• Demonstrable evidence of the application of current practises for fireground risk assessment and competence (commensurate and appropriate to fire service fire investigations).

Assessment Overview

Stage 1

CV and cover letter (sift). Shortlisted candidates will be invited to stage 2.

Stage 2

Assessment for this role is due to place early/mid-June 2021. Please be advised that if you are unable to make the scheduled assessment date, we may not be able to make alternative arrangements.

Please note: Should you be shortlisted and because of the current Covid-19 situation you will need to be able to conduct an interview over a video conferencing service such as Zoom or Microsoft Teams. You will be asked to provide relevant contact details for that to take place if shortlisted.

Additional Information

In line with the Basic Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) employment checks will be completed by successful candidates, which will include a basic criminal records check. Successful candidate will be required to declare any convictions for offences which are not spent under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and any offer of employment is subject to the LFC receiving a criminal records disclosure which it considers satisfactory. Successful candidates should apply to the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) to get a copy of their criminal record and share the original disclosure certificate with the LFC. The check will only show convictions that are not ‘spent’. It will cost the successful candidates £23 (current charge) and usually takes up to 14 days.
