Starting salary: £34,751 per annum
Salary range for the FRS D grade: £34,751 - £39,981 per annum

The role of the Fire Investigation Officer is to investigate the fire scene in order to determine the origin, cause, progression of the fire and how people involved have behaved. Subsequently communicate the findings to various bodies in the form of written reports.
Please note:
• The position is that of a Fire Investigation Officer. This will be for a short fixed term contract until September 2020.
• The successful candidate will take up a position with the Fire Investigation Team, currently based at Dowgate Fire Station. There will be a period of probation of 5 months.
• Working patterns will predominately be on the four watch system (2 days in, 2 nights in and 4 days off). There may be a requirement to undertake a day duty system, if necessary.

Eligibility
This is an FRS internal vacancy and is only open to those that work for the LFB and are eligible to apply.
In order to be eligible for entry to this process, you must:
• A valid full driving license (car/light van);
• A relevant and valid Fire Investigation qualification to the sector minimum requirement (Level 5) and preferably experience or qualification in relevant legal processes (e.g. expert witness or investigative practice), or recognised equivalent qualifications and/ or experience;
• Demonstrable evidence of the application of current practises for fireground risk assessment and competence (commensurate and appropriate to fire service fire investigations).

Assessment Overview
Stage 1: Online application form.
As part of the online application form, candidates must provide evidence to address the following criteria:
Selection Criteria 1 - A relevant and valid Fire Investigation qualification to the sector minimum requirement (Level 5) and preferably experience or qualification in relevant legal processes (e.g. expert witness or investigative practice), or recognised equivalent qualifications and/ or experience.
Selection Criteria 2 - Have experience of communicating the progression of complex investigations (i.e. fatal fires, multi-agency investigations).
Selection Criteria 3 - The candidate must be able to work with operational staff on the fireground and be able to apply appropriate risk assessment processes.
Selection Criteria 4 - The successful candidate will have knowledge and experience of the process of completing a Tier 2 fire investigation defined as complex fire and/or explosion incidents (non-terrorist) where the origin and cause is not easily established.

In line with the Basic Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) employment checks will be completed for the successful person, which will include a basic criminal records check. The successful person will be required to declare any convictions for offences which are not spent under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and a basic disclosure will be undertaken before an appointment is confirmed.
