London Fire Brigade is the largest fire service in the UK and one of the largest in the world. We are a large complex organisation with over 4000+ staff. These are broadly split into three areas, operational (our firefighters), non-operational (Legal, Digital Media, Finance, Procurement, ICT etc. all departments it takes to run a large organisation) Control (They handle all the 999 calls that are made to the Brigade 24/7). Whilst all these areas a covered across various directorates, the Commissioner is ultimately responsible for them all.

The Commissioner of London Fire Brigade is looking for a Chief of Staff to work directly with him to ensure the goals set out by the Commissioner are met. You will be a strategic thinker with the ability to implement, able to prioritise conflicting demands on behalf of the Commissioner and the office of the Commissioner. You will be politically astute representing the Commissioner in high level meetings with the Home Office and the Greater London Authority as and when needed.

You will be able to integrate yourself swiftly into any situation, assessing the best way forward to achieve the right outcomes whilst building positive working relationships at all levels. You can make a real difference and will act the point of contact for the Commissioner’s office. We are looking for someone who is impactful, insightful, a quick thinker, able to shape the future by being a resilient influencer. You will be an excellent communicator who is both articulate and able to write reports, briefs and speeches on behalf of the Commissioner. You will represent the Commissioner at community events where you may be expected to speak, fostering inclusion will be at the heart of everything you do and will be expected to promote and contribute to important strategies including our Togetherness Strategy and Transformational Delivery Plan. You will act as a trusted advisor able to analyse and disseminate information quickly and accurately to ensure that the Commissioner is armed with all the relevant facts and figure to keep things moving in fast paced sometimes challenging environments.

In line with the Basic Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) employment checks will be completed by successful candidates, which will include a basic criminal records check. Successful candidate will be required to declare any convictions for offences which are not spent under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and any offer of employment is subject to the LFC receiving a criminal records disclosure which it considers satisfactory. Successful candidates should apply to the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) to get a copy of their criminal record and share the original disclosure certificate with the LFC. The check will only show convictions that are not ‘spent’. It will cost the successful candidates £23 (current charge) and usually takes up to 14 days.
